PRO: Selected as the Steelers’ first of two sixth-round draft
picks (188th overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft out of
Iowa.
COLLEGE: In his final 24 games, posted 172 tackles (69 solos),
10 stops behind the line of scrimmage, two forced fumbles, five pass deflections
and six interceptions…his 123 tackles in 2007 rank 26th on the
school’s season-record list..graduated in May, 2007 with a bachelor's degree in
Health and Sport Studies and is presently working towards an advanced
degree…four-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference selection. 2007: All-Big
Ten Conference second-team choice by the media, adding honorable mention from
the league’s coaches…named team captain…added Academic All-Big Ten honors…one of
five seniors named to 2007 Leadership Group…started all year at weak-side
outside linebacker, leading the team with a career-high 123 tackles (46 solos),
the fourth-best total in the Big Ten and ranked tied for 23rd in the
nation…registered a 2-yard sack, 5.5 stops for losses of 13 yards and two forced
fumbles…recovered a fumble and deflected two passes…had three interceptions for
49 yards in returns…earned Big Ten and Bronko Nagurski and Master Football
Coaches National Defensive Player of the Week honors for his play vs. Illinois.
2006: Started 12 games at weak-side outside linebacker, sitting out the
Purdue contest with a leg contusion…ranked ninth on the team with 49 tackles (23
solos), adding 4.5 stops for losses of 17 yards…deflected three passes and
intercepted three others. 2005: Academic All-Big Ten Conference
choice…appeared in 12 games as a reserve outside linebacker, recording 25
tackles (14 solos) with a stop for a 1-yard loss…also deflected a pair of
passes. 2004: Academic All-Big Ten Conference choice…saw action vs. Kent
State and Iowa State. 2003: Redshirted as a
freshman.
PERSONAL: Attended New Hampton High School, playing
football for head coach Scott Ferichs…lettered three times in football…named to
the Des Moines Register Elite first-team All-State team as
a linebacker and by the Iowa Newspaper Association as a running back…added
first-team All-Conference accolades as a running back and punter in 2002 and
went on to play in the 2003 Shrine Bowl…team captain as a senior…all-state
honorable mention as a junior running back, adding first-team All-Conference
honors that year…ran for 2,308 yards and 30 career touchdowns, averaging 13
yards per carry…ranked second in the state in rushing in the Class 3A ranks as a
junior, totaling 765 yards…also recorded 98 tackles, seven for negative yards,
as a senior…won the Class 2A state wrestling title at 215 pounds as a
junior…placed second in the 110-meter high hurdles at the Class 3A state track
meet as a junior, placed eighth in the discus and was a member of 400-meter
relay team that qualified for state meet… son of Nancy and Reggie Humpal…born
