The
1962 Steelers wore gold helmets (with a black stripe) with the emblem
consisting of a yellow, red, blue hypocycloid with black "Steel" inside a
white circle with gray outline wearing the emblem on the right side only.
By finishing second in the Eastern
Conference with a 9-5 record, the Steelers qualified for the Playoff Bowl, the
first ever-postseason game.
For
that appearance, the Steelers wanted to do something special, so they changed
the color of their helmets from gold to solid black (with a gold strip) for
the first time and that also served to highlight the new logo, changing the
word "Steel" to "Steelers".
The helmet colors have remained this way
ever since.
