Steelers
Will Continue to Play on Grass at Heinz Field
PITTSBURGH
― The Steelers will continue to play
their home games on natural grass at Heinz Field, the team announced today.
After reviewing a variety of natural and artificial
playing surfaces, the Steelers and Heinz Field management have decided to
maintain natural grass at the stadium for the foreseeable
future.
The majority of our players have told us that they
prefer natural grass to any artificial surface, and grass is also the preference
of our coaches and athletic training staff, said Steelers President Art Rooney
II. We also discussed this with University of Pittsburgh officials to make sure
everyone is comfortable moving forward.
Heinz Field opened in 2001 with natural grass and
switched to DD GrassMaster ― a 97 percent natural grass surface and root system
stabilized by synthetic fibers ― in 2003.
The Steelers home record since moving to the home field
grass at Heinz Field is 41-14-1.
