It was
an evening of fun and games for Steelers players who took part in Challenge the
Champions, an event that benefited Every Child, Inc. at Dave & Busters at
the Waterfront.
The
evening began with a VIP reception as players mingled with guests. After an
autograph session, it was on to the games, and for the players that was the easy
part.
Defensive
end Aaron Smith served as the honorary chair and welcomed the guests in
attendance and then had a good time mingling with them, along with his family.
“This
foundation does a lot of great things,” said Smith. “They fill a lot of loop
holes that the government can’t with disadvantaged children and families. It’s
an opportunity for them to make a difference in people’s lives.”
Smith
got involved with the foundation because his line coach John Mitchell is one of
the board members. A goal of the foundation is to provide any child in need with
a loving, safe and stable family, something Mitchell sees as vastly
important.
“The
goal here in Allegheny County is that every kid, no matter what type of problem
they have, whether it be physically, emotionally or socially, they should have
the opportunity to grow up in a loving and safe environment,” said Mitchell. “We
want to make sure all kids have a chance for that, to be in an environment where
they can be loved.
“The
players here have been really good to Every Child. These players have really
opened their hearts for Every Child, which makes me feel good. If you see the
type of kids we deal with and the situation they are in it will bring tears to
your eyes. It will make you want to do something. It’s for kids. They are our
future. That’s why I do what I do.”
Also on
hand with Smith were Travis Kirschke, Chris Hoke, Brett Keisel, Casey Hampton,
Ike Taylor, Charlie Batch, Anthony Smith, Ryan Clark, Clark Haggans, Deshea
Townsend, Greg Warren and former Steelers defensive back Willie Williams.
