Two annual
Pittsburgh Steelers Youth Football initiatives are coming up on the South Side
this spring -- the Junior Player Development program May 14-26 at Cupples
Stadium and the one-day
USA
Football
Coaching
Schoolon Saturday, May 19 at
the team's facility at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex.
Junior
Player Development (J.P.D.) is a program for boys and girls ages 12-14 who do not
participate in local middle or junior high school-sponsored footballprograms. It
is a 12 day program that includes life lessons taught at each practice,
emphasizing the importance of hard work and team work.
J.P.D. was developed by the NFL as an
introductory/developmental youth tackle football program, designed to teach
every participant every position through a step-by-step progression of skill
instruction packaged in a re-adaptive, fun and entertaining manner. All
participants receive instruction from local coaches.
The
USA Football/Steelers Coaching
School
is
designed to prepare youth football coaches with the ability to teach the game of
football and create a positive experience for their players, parents and
assistant coaches.The clinic will
teach each youth coach effective ways to develop and organize their team, teach
the proper fundamentals, implement drills and communicate with players, parents
and other coaches. Successful high school and youth coaches from the area
will act as clinicians following USA Football's youth coaching principles, which
focus on coaching theory, along with developing a scheme for offense, defense
and special teams. The event combines
lectures with on-field demonstrations of technique and practice
components.
