STEELERS PLAYERS

S TROY POLAMALU

General

“Our defense just persevered, and that’s what great teams do.  We still have one more step to go, but we’ll enjoy this.  We’re a road team.  We’re the Pittsburgh Steelers, it doesn’t matter [where we play].  We have fans everywhere.”

OG ALAN FANECA

On Roethlisberger

“He’s everything you want in a quarterback.  We wouldn’t be where we are today without him leading our offense.  I think he’s just more relaxed this year, and it comes through experience.  It’s not just X’s and O’s.  He still understands the basics, but he also has that game-feel.  I think teams know we’re going to try to run the ball on them, and they want to make Ben beat them.  These past few weeks, Ben’s been doing just that.”

Joey Porter

On Current Position

“We just need to worry about our own story, and not get caught up in what other people are doing.  We’ve been in this game plenty of times, we felt like we had a great opportunity and we capitalized on it.”

General

“It hasn’t sunk in yet but we are going to the dance, everyone said we couldn’t do it being the sixth seed.  We just took the scenic route, it is my third time in the AFC Championship but we finally won.”

“I’ve seen people hold this trophy up in my house twice, I’m just happy this is what it’s all about.

On defensive Coordinator Dick LeBeau

“He comes in and makes everything easier for us, he is just one of those guys you don’t want to let done.  You know his system works because it has worked everywhere he has been.  He is the type of coach you would do anything for.

On success of defense

“It’s all about pressure, we really got after him (Jake Plummer).  I felt like I could beat their tackles off the end and was able to keep containment when he would bootleg to my side.

Clark Haggans

On this season

“This season was filled with adversity for us.  We were sitting, looking at an outside shot to be in the Super Bowl.  This is an unbelievable feeling to be here right now.  We knew we had a lot of hard work ahead of us after week 12, we had to win out to keep our season alive.  We’ve knocked down seven of the eight, we just have one more to go.

On next game

We are just going to have to watch tape and wait to see who we will play, whether it be Seattle or Carolina, we will play and be ready.

General

“I’m speechless, the last time I played here it was against the University of Colorado, that was a big win but we won that one too.

“We can say that we earned our way to the Super Bowl.  It’s just unreal.  We needed to take it one game at a time and now we are taking Jerome (Bettis) home to Detroit.”

Kimo von Oelhoffen

General

“The offense won the game for us today, they kept us on the field and held on to the ball.  They won the game for us.  We just played football just like we did the last six weeks.  Nothing special that’s just how good the Steeler’s are.”

Cedric Wilson

On Game Plan

“I didn’t know I was going to be featured, they stacked the box and the coaches left it up to the receivers to make plays down the field.”

On the defensive end Domonique Foxworth

“You always want to go after the young guys, and we were successful against him.  This is just a stepping stone for us, we have one more game and we have to make the best of it.  I’m very excited, very happy and I’m going to the Super Bowl.”

Willie Williams

On AFC Championship

“Oh nothing new this time, we just have to go there and finish.  This is a different team from 1995 and hopefully we will have a different result.”

General

“Everyone doubted us from the beginning, being the number sixth seed, they said we couldn’t win but now we have.”

On Denver Broncos Football Club

Denver is a great team, I don’t want to take anything away from them but I think we were the better football team today.”

Chris Hope

General

“It’s great to go to the Super Bowl in just my fourth year.  We could have been playing in back-to-back Super Bowls, but last year we weren’t able to get it done (AFC Championship game).

“I can’t say enough about how our offense has been playing, in the middle of the season they were moving the ball but we weren’t scoring.  We’ve turned that around in the end of the season and in the playoffs.

“We got up on them early, our focus this week picked up where it left off from last week. We were able to contain Denver’s offense and come up with a couple of big turnovers.”

Willie Parker

General

“The way we (got to the Super Bowl) is an unbelievable feeling, especially since we fell short last year.  This team has been together since day one and we developed a lot of chemistry.  We hit them in the mouth and jumped on them early, and we were able to take the 12th man out of the game which was huge.”

Ike Taylor

General

“We knew it would be a hard journey, but we all stuck together.  I’m still in game mode right now, we’ve had our back against the wall being a sixth seed.  Not a lot of people thought we could do it.”

On interception

“I missed about ten interceptions this year, we got good pressure up front and I knew it was only a matter of time before I got my hands on one.”

On Defensive Coordinator Dick LeBeau

“He came up with a great game plan, we call him the wizard around here.  He always puts us in a great position.  We I got my interception, I went and gave him the ball.”

Larry Foote

General

“It’s been a dream all year leading up to this point especially knowing it’s (the Super Bowl) is in my hometown.  We had some bumps in the road but we got here. (Jerome Bettis) Demanded that we bring him home and we did it.”

Alan Faneca

General

“We expected it to be a challenge coming in here, but the defense stepped up and got us the ball.  Ben (Roethlisberger) really learned the offense this year, having another year of experience under his belt.  He was able to play football instinctively today and play a little bit looser.”
