On Friday, January 6, FedEx Ground and Pittsburgh
Steelers running back Jerome Bettis presented Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh with a $5,000 donation. Steve
Handy, FedEx Ground Senior VP and Children’s Hospital’s Gerri Giles, Manager,
Free Care Fund were on hand for the check presentation.
Bettis was honored with the FedEx Ground NFL Player
of the Week award for his performance against the Chicago Bears in Week 14.
Bettis ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries in the Steelers’ 21-9
victory over the Chicago Bears.
Bettis scored on touchdown runs of one and five yards to lead
Pittsburgh to the win.
Along with the award, FedEx donates
$5,000 every week to the local children’s hospital in each winning market. The children’s hospitals in the two
season-long winner’s markets, announced at this year’s Super Bowl, will be
awarded $25,000 each. That means
that FedEx will deliver nearly
$250,000 to local children’s hospitals
around the country in recognition of the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of
the Week Award winners.
About the Free Care
Fund
When Children’s
Hospital of Pittsburgh opened its doors on June 5,
1890, its mission was to
provide care to sick and injured children in Pittsburgh regardless of their families’ ability to pay. To
ensure this mission is met year after year, Children’s established the Free Care
Fund. Children’s Free Care Fund ensures that all children receive the medical
care they need, and that no child from the tri-state area be denied care because
of an inability to pay. Children’s provided more than $26 million in free care
in fiscal year 2005.
