Family Fun added to the
Father’s Day 5K / 10K Run & Walk for Prostate Cancer
Sunday, June 21, 2009
Families looking for a great way to be together this coming Father’s Day can take advantage of a new feature of the Father’s Day 5K/10 Run and Walk. The Promenade Stroll, will start and finish on the promenade outside Grille 36 on North Shore Road. Prizes will be awarded for the Ugliest, Most Creative and Funniest ties, as well as prizes for the best stroller decoration and best pet costume.
“We hope families will choose to celebrate Father’s Day with us and make a difference in the fight against prostate cancer,” said Father’s Day 5K/10K Race Director Jerry Livingston. “If one family member chooses to run, the others in the family can still participate in a fun way with the Promenade Stroll,’ continued Livingston.
Last year’s event attracted 1700 participants, and continues to grow. The race will take place at River Front Park at the Quay near Heinz Field. The organization estimates that nearly 2,000 runners and walkers will participate in the event.
Runners are encouraged to sign up online at www.active.com or www.obcolefoundation.org. Volunteers are needed for race preparation and day of race. To volunteer, contact Jerry Livingston at jerryl@yahoo.com.
The race benefits the Obediah Cole Foundation for Prostate Cancer, and is also a part of the PACE Race series.
Founded by prostate cancer survivors Jerry Bortman and Jerry Livingston and former Pittsburgh Steeler Robin Cole, the organization’s mission is education, awareness and early detection. One in six men has a lifetime risk of prostate cancer.
If detected early, prostate cancer is one of the most treatable and survivable cancers. Men age 40 and older are encouraged to be tested. Early detection is as easy as a simple blood test once a year. To arrange for a free screening, call the Obediah Cole Foundation at 412-572-6830.
